Our Story

From a grandmother's garden in Maple Valley to custom edible landscapes across the greater Seattle area.

It Started with Grandma Emaline

8B Lawn and Garden didn't start with a business plan. It started with a grandmother named Emaline Bellesen and a garden in Maple Valley, Washington.

Growing up, the founder spent countless hours at Grandma Emaline's home, hands in the dirt, learning how to grow food for the family. She believed in eating fresh food from home — not as a trend or a lifestyle statement, but as a way of life. The garden beds at her place weren't decorative. They were where dinner came from.

Those hours beside Emaline shaped everything. The patience of waiting for seeds to sprout. The satisfaction of pulling a carrot from the ground and eating it right there. The pride of carrying a basket of tomatoes into the kitchen. The quiet knowledge that you can feed yourself and the people you love from a patch of earth in your own yard.

From Lawn Care to Gardens

Years later, after working in landscape design and property maintenance, the founder kept noticing the same pattern. Nearly every conversation eventually turned to this: "Do you know anything about growing food? I've always wanted a vegetable garden, but I don't know where to start."

These weren't casual questions. People were hungry for this — the same thing Grandma Emaline had given so freely. They just didn't have their own Emaline to show them the way.

That gap became the seed for 8B — a way to bring what Emaline gave to one family in Maple Valley to hundreds of families across South King County and beyond.

Why "8B"?

USDA Hardiness Zone 8b is the official growing zone for Kent, Washington. It defines the place with a simple climate signature: winter lows around 15°F, a long growing season, and unique conditions that determine what thrives here.

Choosing "8B" as our name was intentional. It says: we know this place. We're not a national brand applying generic advice. Every recommendation we make is tuned to what actually succeeds in Zone 8b. We understand the microclimate, the soil types, the wet springs and dry summers. That specificity builds trust and delivers better results.
